The changes, expected to come into effect from late 2026, introduce a brand-new Short Term Graduate Work Visa and expand eligibility for the existing Post Study Work Visa (PSWV). These updates are aimed at giving graduates more flexibility while ensuring New Zealand continues attracting skilled and genuine international students.
1. New Short Term Graduate Work Visa Introduced
One of the biggest announcements is the introduction of a new 6-month Short Term Graduate Work Visa.
This visa is designed for students who complete an eligible qualification in New Zealand but do not qualify for a traditional Post Study Work Visa.
Key Features
Eligible applicants will receive:
Up to 6 months of open work rights
Opportunity to search for employment in New Zealand
Pathway to transition into an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV)
Eligibility Requirements
To qualify, applicants must:
Hold a Level 5 to Level 7 qualification on the NZQCF
Have studied full-time in New Zealand for at least 24 weeks
Apply within 3 months after their student visa expires
Not have previously held a Post Study Work Visa or Short Term Graduate Work Visa
Show evidence of at least NZD $5,000 maintenance funds
Certain qualifications such as English language courses, foundation studies, and bridging programmes will not qualify.
Important Conditions
This visa comes with several restrictions:
Holders must work under an employment agreement
Self-employment and operating a business will not be allowed
The visa cannot be extended
Partners and dependent children cannot be supported under this visa category
This means the visa is intended as a temporary bridge for graduates to secure skilled employment in New Zealand.
2. Post Study Work Visa Eligibility Expanded
Immigration New Zealand has also confirmed an important expansion to Post Study Work Visa eligibility.
From late 2026, students completing a Level 7 Graduate Diploma in New Zealand may become eligible for a Post Study Work Visa if they also hold a bachelor’s degree completed either in New Zealand or overseas.
New Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must:
Complete a full-time Graduate Diploma at NZQCF Level 7
Study the qualification entirely in New Zealand
Be enrolled for the full duration of the programme
Hold an existing bachelor’s degree
Cross-crediting and recognition of prior learning (RPL) will not qualify toward eligibility.
Visa Duration
Eligible applicants may receive a Post Study Work Visa for:
The duration of their Graduate Diploma study in New Zealand
Up to a maximum of 12 months
Importantly, applicants can only receive one Post Study Work Visa in their lifetime. If someone has previously held a PSWV, they will not qualify again, even after completing a higher qualification later.
Why These Changes Matter
These updates create additional pathways for international students who may previously have struggled to secure post-study work rights in New Zealand.
The changes are especially beneficial for:
Students considering Graduate Diplomas after completing a bachelor’s degree
International students wanting more time to secure employment
Applicants seeking a pathway toward AEWV and future residence opportunities
At the same time, the rules also signal that course selection and immigration planning are becoming more important than ever. Choosing the wrong programme or education pathway could still leave students without long-term work rights.
Final Thoughts
New Zealand’s latest visa changes show a clear shift toward creating more flexible but more structured post-study pathways for international students.
While these changes create opportunities, students should carefully assess:
Course eligibility
Long-term immigration goals
Employment prospects
Future residence pathways
